Program Description:
Madeline's 1st and 2nd Grade Reading is a two CD programme with 16 activities, designed by educators. to provide a very comprehensive exposure to the specific skills and knowledge needed to be able to read and write.
Madeline, the little French girl of story book fame, invites you into her house In France. At the Grade 1 level of the programme, you are presented with a choice of seven activity areas to explore. In Madeline's Scrap Book, you are identifying which word matches with which picture to develop word recognition. You can choose to do this in English, French or Spanish.
In 3 In A Row, you play a crossword game with Madeline which has you filling in missing letters in words, as a way to develop your spelling skills. (see middle right) Each activity has 3 levels of difficulty so when you play cards with Pepito in the Card Game at level one, you are identifying rhyming words and at level 3 in the same activity, the challenge is increased as you are identifying words with the same vowel. In this way the seven activities, at the grade 1 level, cover a large variety of basic skills and knowledge around early reading as well as provide different levels of challenge to match where your child is at in their own development.
The Grade 2 level builds on a lot of the learning activites in Grade 1, using different activities to maintain the interest of the child. It also introduces new learning areas in the activites designed to develop reading comprehension, learning synonyms and antonyms and sorting words in alphabetical order.
What you in essence have in this program, is six possible levels of challenge across the two grade levels. The total program is designed to assist in developing 20 specific skill or knowledge subsets that support basic reading and writing. These specific skills and knowedge areas you can view in the progress tracking, that is built into the program. There is also a built in dictionary (In the 3 languages mentioned) that can assist the child in doing the activities.

Who Is This Software Program For:
Madeline with her warm and encouraging personality matches very well with young girls though we have seen 6 and 7 year old boys also enjoy this program. This is for the child for whom you want to give a comprehensive exposure to reading fundamentals and can also be very useful either in a remedial or enrichment learning situation. The program states grade 1 and 2. We know that some of the activities get well into the grade 3 level and all the activites together, provides lots of enriching practice for kids at these grade levels

Why We Selected This Program
The activities were fun and engaging for our testers. With our own evaluation, we noticed that there has been careful thought given by the program's designers, to incorporating a comprehensive base of skill subsets in the activities, that support being able to read.
With 16 activities and three levels of difficulty availiable in any activity, there is good depth of content to allow a child to both cover and advance through all the specific learning areas available in the program, as well as provide lots of different activity.
We also lliked the fact that if a child is having difficulty in an activity, the program will detect this, prompting Madeline to offer simple and understandable help on the concept or nature of the exercise. Correspondingly, if a child is doing well, the program will automatically prompt the user to go to the next level of difficulty, to find the right level of performance challenge for the user. If a child is doing well there is lots of room in the program to move up the performance bar.
We also liked Madeline's 1st and 2nd Grade Reading because it offers some basic exposure to the french language which can be a good way to find out if your child has an interest or an aptitude for leaning a second language. (either french or spanish)
This is a very well designed program with disarming simplicity and lots of learning value embedded in the activities.
