KidPix is a fun and interactive drawing and painting program. It has 5 separate areas that use animation, pictures and slides to culminate in a slide show presentation. The program can be simple or expanded.
KidPix is commonly used in school environments because of its capability to fit into different subject areas. Since it is used in schools, children often have some familiarity with the program and will know how to navigate at home.
The main area of KidPix is a section called "Paint a Picture." Here children can use traditional tools such as paint can, paintbrush, eraser, text, stamps and pencil to create their own slide. This slide can be saved and then imported into the "Slide Show." You simply click on the icon for the tool you wish to use, and then drag or click on the screen to use it. You can use buttons at the bottom of the slide to create transitions between slides and sound effects.
In "Moopies" you can animate anything that is drawn or stamped on the screen. "Stampimator" animates anything stamped onto the page while the drawings remain stationary. This provides an arena for making backgrounds and animating certain objects in the picture.
"Wacky TV" is where you can view movie files and decide what youd like to use in the presentations. Movie files can be imported from outside of KidPix or from your own video camera as well. Lastly, "Digital Puppets" has a file of puppets that can be saved and used for the slide show.
This version of Kid Pix has added a wealth of starter templates upon which the user can build, new 3D visual effects and the ability to export your finished work as graphic files that you can send via e mail or place on a web site. Our one advisory is to take the time to explore the main page as there are lots of hidden options at the top that you would not notice at first glance.

" I like using the moopies to see how the letters in my name move on the screen." Jason, age 5
" My favorite part of Kidpix is when we make a slide show and I can hear my voice and see my video in it and we show it to the class." Katie, age 7

KidPix is a great program for the child who enjoys art and drawing. Since it also has the capability to be a writing tool the art component can be incorporated into the text, producing a wonderful end product. The multimedia aspect is a useful precursor learning experience to more complex programs such as Power Point. The child who is interested in animation and drama will love writing stories and then animating the characters.
