The Carmen Sandiego series are spy adventure programs. Carmen challenges you to stop her evil schemes. In Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time (formerly known as "Where In Time is Carmen Sandiego), she steals a time machine called the "Chronosimmer". Sending her band of thieves off to different and well-known times in history, she steals famous historical objects and in so doing disrupts history as we know it.

As the "good agent", your challenge is to follow each one of these thieves, capture them, recover the famous object each thief has stolen and set history back on it's rightful path. The people and times you encounter range from Queen Hatsheput, the first female Pharaoh of Egypt to Julius Caesar in Rome, William the Conqueror, Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven, Christopher Columbus and Thomas Edison.

There are 18 historical "time capsule" experiences in all. The program is designed to get you to discover specifics events of the time you are in. By asking questions, gathering information and using your sleuthing skills, you can you stop the impending results of their mischief and capture the thief.

In Rome, you meet Julius Caesar and discover that the Roman Forum has been stolen and the famous Roman water system has been sabotaged. With good detective work you find a way to help the Romans get the water working again. They in turn will help you find the clues you need to find and capture the thief.

As you ask questions you will obtain the information you need to capture the thief. You will also learn about the history of the people, events and life conditions of the time. In this program there is much you can learn (Did you know that the first known novel was written by a Japanese lady in waiting, named Murasaki, in the 11th century?)

Once you have completed all 18 historic explorations and solved them all you will have a final Great Chase where you will travel through all 18 time periods to capture Carmen herself.

Each time travel adventure has a detailed 8 page historical description of the place and events you are experiencing. Your guide on each adventure will offer you helpful hints (when you ask) to help you unravel the story. Carmen, as always, is watching your progress. You also can save your progress in the program.

" I liked trying to get the water pipes working properly underground in Rome. The man in the Roman bath was really funny especially when I had dirty water splashing all over him. " - John, age 12

" In China I got lost in the desert and it took me an age to get out, but I did eventually did using the compass and the maps." Raymond, age 11

Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time is for a child who is engaged by good adventure/mystery stories and who has the ability to experiment with lots of information until the answer emerges. It reminds me of Clue Junior books, where you carefully find the answer in the detail. A creative mind and a good memory for detail are important capabilities of the child who is going to enjoy this program.

Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time really allows your child to exercise initiative by encouraging him or her to snoop around, discover how to find the answers or in other words - think. You have to listen carefully to the story. What the program does very well is expose your child to a wide variety of interesting historical events and times. With an introductory exposure to 18 major historical time periods and events, it builds reading comprehension as you have to read and understand elements of the story to succeed .We found that for some it will kindle an interest in history, for others will focus on the pursuit

The sleuthing experiences you go through are extremely well constructed weaving together very cleverly the story telling, solving the challenge and uncovering the clues to find the thief. The more detailed history books (one for each time travel segment ) are accurate and clearly written.

This is an ideal program where you as a parent can do the program with your child and bring to life the events you are seeing. This program can be just as engaging for the parent to experience as for the child. There is lots of historical detail that can be new learning for both parent and child. It can be very rewarding, if you do this program together.
