Zoo Tycoon 2 is the Microsoft entry in what has become a growing segment of "tycoon" simulation programs, but with a very simple and engaging difference. This program is about taking care of animals, as well as designing and managing a zoo. You are a bit like "Young Gerald McGrew" of Dr. Suess fame, who sets off to build a zoo. The nurturing aspect of caring for animals holds an appeal for many kids and is one that, as a parent, you can enjoy with them.

You start off with a big empty lot and all the building tools you need to start construction of the housing areas for the animals. In designing the living area for the various animals - you have around 40 different types of animals to choose from - you want to design each area to most resemble the natural habitat of each species. The zookeeper will guide you on the type of environment each animal needs - Bengal tigers need rainforest trees and lots of vegetation or wolves who need a coniferous forest - and you select the specific trees and vegetation and lay out the physical terrain.

Once you've built your exhibits, you then build concession stands for your visitors, hire staff who tend to the animals, act as tour guides, and maintain the grounds. Once you open your zoo, the guests come and the resulting revenue allows you maintain the zoo, as well as purchase new items for your exhibits, improve your staff's abilities, make new animals available for adoption, and buy more advanced buildings and structures, such as the reptile house or petting zoo.

Make sure you don't let your animals get out of the cages or your guests will go berserk. If you don’t make your animals and guests happy, you will not be successful zoo manager.

The program allows you to either work with set scenarios with specific objectives that start at an easy level and as you succeed, unlocks more choices as well as becomes more challenging, or you can work in a "free form" mode where you are presented with wide open spaces and a fixed budget so you can build whatever you want.

if you are familiar with the first version of Zoo Tycoon, this the second generation of the program offers these changes. The visuals are now rendered in 3D graphics making it much more visually engaging. As the zoo keeper, you are now able to actually enter into the animal areas you have constructed and get a close up view of the your work and the animals. The tools that you have to construct the areas and terrains for the animals has also been enhanced allowing you to create much more elaborate and interesting environments for the animals than you you could before. With these changes, the underlying structure and modes of operation of the program as very similar to the earlier version.

" I really liked it when the polar bears had cubs. It was so cute. Polar bears are my favourite animal."
- Catherine, age 10

"This is a great way to spend an afternoon. I get to run the world and Zoo Tycoon makes it even better because now I take care of animals. I also get to make a profit as I run my own zoo, watch my animals have babies, make designer animals pens and more! This game is easy to play and a lot of fun."
- Sandra, age 14

"This is going to sound awful but I let my animals out of their areas just to see what would happen. They were chasing the visitors everywhere. It was a riot to watch."
- Peter, age 12

For any kid of any age who likes going to the zoo. Among the simulation programs, we noticed that the kids who were really engaged with this program were the ones who enjoy animals. This program really touches the nurturing side of kids who like the sense that they are responsible for the well being of the animals (remember the neopets craze a while ago?). This program will be enjoyed by those who are comfortable with an easier pace and would enjoy taking the time to design a really interesting zoo environment.

Zoo Tycoon is one of the easiest of the simulation games to set up - a couple of clicks and away you go - and the interface is intuitively easy to explore and understand, making it very accessible to younger players or those new to simulation type programs. Zoo Tycoon doesn't have the fast paced thrills of operating a roller coaster theme park, but then a roller coaster theme park doesn't provide the rather unique experience of seeing animals producing offspring and watching a family grow.

The underlying learning that is embedded in this program is the experiencing of a realistic business management process. You are both the designer and manager of a zoo that has you making decisions that will attract customers (or not), keeping your staff happy and productive ( or not - yes it is possible to have a strike on your hands), caring properly for your animals and, at the end of the day, producing a profit, that will allow you to expand and develop your park. You are experiencing and appreciating the every day real life trade offs that have to be made, in order to manage an enterprise. And, in the midst of this, you are caring for animals that are dependent upon you for their quality of life.

We also liked the fact that the program provides, for those with the interest , extensive background material on each animal, far beyond what you need to play the game, such as each animal's food preferences, the geographic locations of their natural habitat, and an overall sense of each animal's distinctive needs

If you are new to simulation type programs and would like a program that will give you an excellent introduction to this type of learning and playing experience, Zoo Tycoon 2 is a very good program to choose. It's also a program that will be enjoyed by those who have played with other simulation type programs.
