In the course of evaluating learning software, we have given our "testers" a variety of games to try out along the way. Here are some more programs that have come back with near universal "thumbs up".

Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets

Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets is a faithful recreation of the major elements of the original story. In the game, you take control of the character of Harry and the screen follows you in your adventure.

Once you are introduced to all the characters and make your way to Hogwarts, you learn magic spells in your classes, that you’ll use to make your way through the game.

This, the second program in the series has better depth of content, with lots of diversions off the main storyline's mission, such as going out for a game of Quiddich or entering into a friendly dueling game with other wizards. (See screen shot)

Our testers enjoyed the program thoroughly, as they we able to recreate and relive their experience of the book and/or the film. One production element of the program that really stood out was the dialogue and interaction of the various characters. The dialogue and voices appear to be lifted from the film and this really brings the characters to life on the computer screen.

If you found this second movie a little dark (compared to the first), you won't find this to be the case with the software program. The story line is an exciting adventure without some of the more frightening elements from the film.

The operating design is straightforward enough that 7 or 8 year olds can play it easily. The program will appeal to a Harry Potter fan of any age. As a holiday selection, you can't go wrong with this one.

Moop & Dreadly-Treasure of Bing Bong Island

Moop & Dreadly is probably one of the best new adventure problem solving interactive adventure games for children in the 7 -11 age range. The story is of Dreadly, an energetic young sea captain and his shipmate Moop, an oversized purple character, in a classic hunt for buried treasure.

The program is organized in 6 chapters, with each chapter presenting a specific mission and leaving you at the edge of a new cliff hanger at the end, propelling you to want to keep going.

The program is beautifully designed with state of the art graphics, an animated world filled with humour and atmosphere and very well constructed clue finding paths to challenging puzzles to figure out. Very cleverly as well, the program can be switched from English to Spanish. This is a very well thought out program for kids in this age range.

Civilization III

If you have never explored the world of simulation games and would like to try one out, Civilization III would be a very good choice.

Civilization III allows you to rewrite the history books. The program begins in 4000 BC with you are in control of a small tribe of nomads who decide to settle down. You guide this early form of civilization as it develops basic technology, encounters other cultures, and deals with the associated conflicts. As Sim City is a city building experience, Civilization III is a world wide empire building strategy game that will have you using all the tools of political leadership and will involve matching your wits against many leading historical figures across the span of 6000 years.

Needless to say this is not a short and simple journey (recommended minimum age would be 12). The graphics are well done and the simulation's design complexity will keep you fully engaged.

Civilization III is real classic in the gendre that will be around 5 years from now, as will you be playing it, as there is that much to the program.
