You may think it unusual to find a relaxation program in the midst of educational software. The truth is that one's internal state plays a foundational role in one's ability to learn. And truth be told, most of us including our kids are not very good at regulating our internal states (other than through the use of pharmaceuticals).
When one experiences stress, the body and mind become mobilized to fight or run, just like a hissing cat with the back arched. Muscles tense up, breathing becomes shallow and fast, brain waves speed up and a series of internal processes are activated in order to set off the protective mechanisms needed to survive.
This fight or flight arousal is an appropriate reaction to deal with a real threat to our safety but is counter-productive in a learning situation. If you are stressed out, you will not be receptive to learning.
The energies of the body and mind are directed towards vigilance and protection and the energies for enhanced intelligence, creativity, concentration and focus are put into the background. All relaxation techniques that are done appropriately, slow down brainwaves so that alpha brainwaves in the 8-13 hz range become predominant. These brainwaves facilitate a mental state that promotes effective learning.
Let Go is two 25 minute guided experiences done by Eli Bay that takes the listener into states of deep relaxation, dissolving blocks to learning by dramatically reducing the stress-arousal state in the body and mind. Through practical breathing, muscle relaxation and internal awareness techniques, the body becomes loose and relaxed and the mind becomes alert and focused, a mind-body state that significantly boosts concentration and memory.
The first exercise - Empowered Breathing - involves three variations of a simple breathing technique that guides you to breathe deeply into the abdomen. This measurably unwinds the tensions and alters the internal chemistry of the body. It can be done by anyone, even children, and results in greater mental clarity and enhanced concentration.
The second exercise - Progressive Relaxation - is a well established technique in the field that works through alternately tensing and then releasing the tension in the various muscle groupings. A calm clarity emerges in the mind that has to be experienced to be appreciated.
If these exercises are routinely done , memory and concentration tangibly improve. So does sleeping, energy levels, confidence, self-esteem, locus of control, self-mastery. |

For any individual who finds it difficult to concentrate or maintain concentration as well as those who are highly anxious, have sleeping problems, or are hyperactive. All of these characteristics impede learning and are characterisitics that can be changed through the experience of deep relaxation.
There are many audio products available that purport to assist in relaxation and to varying degrees have some effect. Eli Bay has been actively teaching stress management for 30 years and is absolutely consummate in delivery of relaxation experiences. What is more important is that as he is guiding you into experiences of relaxation he is simultaneously teaching you the skill such that you can do it on your own. The two exercises on Let Go - Empowered Breathing and Progressive Relaxation - teach you breathing and muscle relaxation techniques that you will learn while you are enjoying the benefits of the guided experiences he takes you on. He is passing on skills that when you learn them, you will have them for a lifetime. I learned the techniques 18 years ago and still use them.
Dan Lang - editor Learning Village
