Robert Shields.
Bob Shields is an elementary school teacher who lives in Port Williams, Nova Scotia. He has taught at the grades 4, 5 and 6 level for 12 years, and currently lectures in the School of Education at Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S. in the areas of Elementary Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Acadia University is widely known as a frontrunner in the use of computer technology and software in classroom and research settings.
Bob has used computers and software in a variety of educational situations for over 15 years. For the past several years, he has worked with the N.S. Department of Education reviewing software across all subject areas and making recommendations of titles to be made available for schools. Through his review experience, he has also developed selection criteria for reviewers of educational software for schools.
He is interested in how technology can be developed to enhance learning at all levels. He believes that children learn best when learning is engaging and challenging and when children are encouraged to construct meaning through hands on and minds on inquiry. Of particular interest to him are the programs which support development of research, literacy, numeracy and desktop publishing.
Bob has contributed to authoring new curriculum guides in Human Rights education and Social Studies and conducts province wide teacher workshops on the new grade 6 Language Arts Assessment. He is also a coauthor of Tapestry, published by Harcourt-Brace 1996, which is a national Elementary Social Studies program for grades 4-6.
